SA Bodeen Reads

I read. I like. I recommend.

The Living

The Living - Matt de la Pena This one had peril and intrigue and romance and, oh yeah, SHARKS. A win win in my book, people. Cliffhanger of an end, but the next one is coming soon.

Half Bad (Half Life Trilogy)

Half Bad (Half Life Trilogy) - Sally Green Really enjoyed this fast read. I will definitely be waiting to read the next one to see what happens.

The Winter People

The Winter People - Jennifer McMahon Creepy page turner that I couldn't put down! Save it for a day you don't need to get anything done, trust me.

The Kept: A Novel

The Kept: A Novel - James Scott Set in 1897, this one is brutal. There is a hardly a moment for the reader to relax. Compelling and riveting. I'll read anything else he writes, for sure.

Pioneer Girl

Pioneer Girl - Bich Minh Nguyen This is for anyone like me who loved the Little House books. I absolutely love the mystery created around them in this novel, and the way it interspersed with the main character's own path in life.

The Real Boy

The Real Boy - Erin Mcguire, Anne Ursu Charming and magical. This book was like a secret you want to be let in on...

Shovel Ready

Shovel Ready - Adam Sternbergh This isn't like books I usually read, but I read it in one sitting. A little bloody, but definitely entertaining. Serious page turner.

The Martian

The Martian - Andy Weir This one had me riveted! And the main character, despite being marooned on Mars and facing death every day, was frickin' hilarious. Like I laughed out loud when I wasn't biting my nails. It's sci-fi unlike any I've read before. Really enjoyed it:)

The Good Luck of Right Now

The Good Luck of Right Now - Matthew Quick I read this on a flight from Portland to Minneapolis. I clapped at the end. Love love love. The characters in this are amazing, I couldn't pick my favorite. Max is a revelation. This should be the next book on everyone's reading list.

Proxy

Proxy - Alex London I sat down with this about 6 last night and didn't leave the couch until I was done. The pace of this is crazy good, there just wasn't any opportunity for me to put it down. Even thought I didn't read it until 2014, definitely one of my YA faves of 2013.

Nil

Nil - Lynne Matson The premise of this one was right up my alley: teens trapped on a mysterious island, given only 365 days to find their gate to return to their world. The book totally delivered. (And huge cheer that it is a stand-alone with a great, satisfying ending)Serious page-turner, was hard to put down.

Wise Young Fool

Wise Young Fool - Sean Beaudoin The voice in this is amazing. Couldn't put it down. Ritchie is the most authentic teen I've read since Winger by Andrew Smith.

Maggot Moon

Maggot Moon - Sally Gardner Wanted to read this for a long time, didn't get around to it until today, couple days after the Printz nod. Ever have those characters you fall in love with? Standish Treadwell is one of those. This story, wow. So unique. I sat down with this and didn't move until I'd finished. Definitely a one-sitter.

Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands

Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands - Chris Bohjalian I sat down with this one yesterday and didn't get up until I'd finished. Chilling, heartbreaking, and even prescient, it hooked me from the start and didn't let me go. The title seemed familiar to me but I couldn't place it. The moment when the source of the words Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands was mentioned in the book was so powerful. I think there will be a big appeal for this one among YA readers, and this title should definitely be considered for next year's Alex Award.

Counting by 7s

Counting by 7s - Holly Goldberg Sloan I haven't loved a middle grade novel this much since Holes. I didn't want it to end. Love love love. One of my favorites of 2013.

Sea Creatures

Sea Creatures - Susanna Daniel The first third was a little slow, but by the time I got to the mid point I couldn't put it down. I wasn't always a fan of the main character, but it was a good read.
