SA Bodeen Reads

I read. I like. I recommend.

The Furies: A Novel

The Furies: A Novel - Natalie Haynes (I read an ARC, not the Kindle edition, just FYI. ) This is one where the truth is right there in front of you, but painted so thickly with the mundane that the revelation is astonishing. Really enjoyed it. Not a happy ending, exactly, but a satisfying one I think.

Love Letters to the Dead

Love Letters to the Dead - Ava Dellaira Sad, haunting, and mesmerizing. Loved it.

The Island of Excess Love

The Island of Excess Love - Francesca Lia Block Haunting and provocative. I loved Love in the Time of Global Warming, and this continues Pen's story.

100 Sideways Miles

100 Sideways Miles - Smith Andrew It's no secret that I love his books and this one is another to add to my shelf. Read the entire thing on a flight, and fell in love with Finn and Cade. No one does vomit or accidental nudity better than Andrew Smith.

The Accident

The Accident - Chris Pavone Geez frickin' Louise. Did not want to put this one down. It's like GONE GIRL meets THE BOURNE IDENTITY. Loved it:)

The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry - Gabrielle Zevin Loved this book so much. One of those you sink in to and are sad when it's over.

We Were Liars

We Were Liars - E. Lockhart I read this on a flight. There's something to be said for reading a book like this in one sitting, so that you are completely absorbed in the world of the story. But it also means an ending such as this will be far more powerful, because you are fully immersed. Holy crap, the ending slayed me. Wow. I can't say anything more without giving anything away, so I'll leave it at this: read it.

The Riverman

The Riverman - Aaron Starmer Loved this book. I'm still sitting here thinking about it.

Radiance of Tomorrow: A Novel

Radiance of Tomorrow: A Novel - Ishmael Beah I felt like I returned to Africa while reading this. God, the characters just broke my heart. Brilliant novel.

Brooklyn, Burning

Brooklyn, Burning - Steve Brezenoff This is another example of how great YA can be. Sat down to read a couple pages and didn't move until I'd read the whole book. Kid grabs you (as does the unique second person POV) and doesn't let you go.

Liv, Forever

Liv, Forever - Amy Talkington Ghosts at a boarding school, evil family legacies, what' s not to like?

Entangled

Entangled - Amy Rose Capetta Enjoyed this one a lot. Fun sci-fi. Great cast of characters.

The Peculiars

The Peculiars - Maureen Doyle McQuerry I read this last year, but it's recently out in paperback, so I wanted to have a more recent word about it. LOVED THIS BOOK. It is such unique YA. It had a flavor of steam punk and also supernatural, and I think it is one of the most under rated YA books of last year. So get it and read it. They've given the paperback a new cover (the one on here is not it) which is killer. Check it out.

Cy in Chains

Cy in Chains - David L. Dudley This one is heart wrenching and brutal.

We Were Here

We Were Here - Matt de la Pena Oh wow. This one will break your heart. The characters are so vivid and real. Fabulous YA.

The Story of Owen

The Story of Owen - E.K. Johnston Loved this book. Was reading on a plane and saw the pages dwindling and tried to slow down. Didn't work. While this is a about a dragon slayer and there are dragons, it is more about a cast of characters which you will fall in love with.
